Beyond the white coat

Image
It's been two(2) years of practice as a Medical Doctor and the journey has come in different shades with every experience stretching me beyond the previous limit and pushing toward something better. Medical practice has been a blessing, not that it comes with a lot of benefits but because I get to serve selflessly and see the smile of a patient that gets better. As a reflect today, I wonder if, asides family members and close associates, does the world really see beyond the white coat? Pardon me if I'm wrong, however it seems to me that the world sees a help, a hero/heroine, a doctor, "the favoured specie",  just someone paid to take care of health issues and that person has to be available when needed no matter the timing or circumstance but is that all about us? Do you remember doctors are humans? Do you recognize that they have a life outside work with responsibilities just like you? Do you know the traumas? Do you see the scars? Do you see us beyond the white...

Naomis and Modercais

Tamar a 21 year old fresher comes home driven by a dark handsome man in his early thirties. She seems blown away as she grins from side to side, reluctantly says goodbye and heads for the door. Tamar : Good evening mum (hugs mum). Mum : Good evening dear, welcome back. How was school today? Tamar : School was great, I had fun (she settles into the couch). Mum : Hmm! I can imagine (winks at her). Tamar : Mum (mouths at mother) Mum : Yes, is there something you want to tell me? (Taking a sit beside her) Tamar : No!!! Mum : Hmm! (Giving her a suggestive look) Mum : I don’t mean to pry but I couldn’t help but notice the handsome young man that dropped you off. Tamar : (Blushes) Well, his name is Joshua, a final year student of law. We met two days ago. He's got big dreams, loves music and travelling just like me.  Mum : Interesting. Tamar : He says he likes me (Gives a sigh waiting for a response). Mum : I see, who wouldn’t love this beautiful lady, a t...

Tradition versus Faith

Image
“...we want a king over us. Then we shall be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.” 1 Samuel 8:19-20 (NIV)   The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Tradition as ‘an inherited, established, or customary pattern of thought, action, or behaviour (such as a religious practice or a social custom)’ and Faith as ‘belief and trust in and loyalty to God’. (Emphasis mine) It’s no news that the natural man has forgotten his true nature and become accustomed to the fallen nature so seamlessly he finds it difficult to relate to spiritual realities; the very fabric of his creation. This is true for most characters through scripture it’s almost as if we humans never learn from the tragedies of those that have gone ahead.   Hence, it was no surprise when the Israelites having dwelt in Egypt for 430years requested for a ‘human’ king after their exodus. They had watched a physical king go out before the soldiers in battle and...

Beholding as in a mirror (The power of vision)

Image
And we all with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into His image with ever increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is Spirit. 2 Cor. 3:18 (NIV) The body is made up of many parts amongst which are sense organs, and these have special features that grant them direct connection to the higher centre. They have in them the capacity to send and receive impulses and one of such is the eye. Having a ‘functional’ eye means you can see and correctly interpret that which is before you.  The word of God calls our attention to something profound that makes for growth and progress and that is the power of vision ; the ability to see, to perceive. It is a principle that enables taking hold of a thing. Through scripture we see God using the power of sight to birth things in the earth realm and communicating the same to people in different dispensations, from Abraham to Moses to David to Jeremiah to the Apostles and the church. And God said, let there be l...

It rains hardest for a bountiful harvest

Image
August! The month for rains here in the Northern part of Nigeria. Oh! Every farmer looks forward to it because he believes it will bring about a good reward for his labour. More so, the weather becomes good, everywhere is lush and green. From the smell of fresh corn to the appetising fruits and veggies, it seems a perfect month, little wonder eight signifies new beginnings but with great provision comes greater responsibility and doggedness to not be hindered by the comfort of a warm bed or the distress of wet days else one ends up like the sluggard. As it is with the seasons of rain, so it is with our lives. You see life is in seasons and sometimes it feels hot and dry, at other times wet, flooded and drowning, some other time its perfect. There are times the pressure builds trying to drown hope like the rains do threaten to spoil crops but somewhere in the midst of it all, the plants are preserved, how? I don’t know, maybe they cried to God for help. You say sometimes the crops are...

Fear the controller

Image
Fear; False Evidences Appearing Real, whoever defined it in those terms was right. Famous fear, thriving in the mind and exploring the senses; its name sending chills down the bodies of millions maybe billions; a jailer with trophies to its name. As a child I was afraid of the dark, somehow, I was made to believe that there was a nameless monster waiting in the dark to grab me. It was so bad that once it was dark, even with the lights on I wouldn’t go for an errand alone and guess who I carried along? My kid brother. It’s funny right? Yes, it was that bad. Even though over time, I have been able to conquer fear of the dark I have come to realize with time that it wasn’t just that particular fear that had me in its control. Oh! I discovered that there were other aspects of my life that were in its control. For instance, the fear of heights but I think the worst for me was the fear of failure. Seems like a good kind of fear, right? Hmm! I can’t tell the extent to which it affected me...

Sarah's secret Ingredient

Image
She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.’ Prov. 31:27-29 The sayings of King Lemuel full of wisdom and great insight, the description of a woman he considers virtuous as taught by his mother. Reading through the bible I’ve come across great women of great impact whose influence is trans-generational. Some of which seemed to have secured the hearts of their husbands with such great skill they were loved to a fault. For a long time, it baffled me how that Sarah had such an influence on Abraham. She seemed to do no wrong before his eyes, more so, God backed the woman up and it seemed Abraham was helpless in the face of it. Disturbed with the numerous questions that ran through my mind, I was spurred to go on a search of what secret ingredient she used to spice up her marriage; what made her have firm ...
